Mandarins, and some other stuff that’s not as fun to look at (but important!)

It’s been an exciting couple weeks around the f+ compound! had a birthday on the 12th, went to disneyland, which is a lot smaller than I remember. In fact, not much has changed since I went there nearly 15 years ago, but the indiana jones ride was worth the wait! I loved it! :)

Also made it out to meet with some galleries, even stopped by Copro Nason to catch the Blab! show which was worth the trip itself. An excellent line up of artists, including a huge piece by jeff Soto and some new names that thoroughly blew my mind in person. I highly recommend catching it if you haven’t already!

When I got back from California, I had an insane amount of catch up to do. Sculpting was almost done on several pieces, but I decided to put some things on hold and hammer out the two mandarins I had commissioned by two separate buyers. I think they literally have the most possible resin on them that can keep them just shy of tipping over! I really tried to go there with these two. The inspiration for these made it quite the challenge to live up to!

It was kind of fun trying to make these twice. I didn’t want to make them exactly the same, but I wanted them to be very similar so no one felt like they got an “upgraded” version or anything. So they each have little differences and different weapons.

Here’s some pics to break up my inane, un-caffeinated typing:

My light box pics looked pretty washed out, so I took some outdoor pics for a change! :)

these where an absolute blast to do! Thanks to both the buyers that commissioned me to do these! If you’d like to commission a piece I am currently reserving for September and October. With my solo show coming up in November space is very limited, so please feel free to email me to line up a piece: josh@fplusnever

Also, my solo show at Red Hot Robot is slated for Friday the 13th in November (How cool is that)! If you’d like to be put on the preview list for the show, simply email me “preview” in the subject line and I’ll put you on the list.

One final plug: I have some pieces available in my web store! Some studio pieces I’m finally willing to part with. If you buy a piece, you’re supporting a fulltime artist that wants to drink champagne this weekend! that’s a great cause!

As always, stay sweet interwebs! see ya soon!

Sweating to the oldies (i.e. 90’s alternative)

It’s been busy over here at the f+ compound. pretty much booked through september with commissions, (including a couple mega size pieces!) have a handful of freelance gigs to handle, and just locked in a solo show in mid november! So, for as busy as it’s been, it won’t hold a candle to how busy I’ll be between here and there.

With the impending pressure of about 90 sleepless nights, I have my Birthday tomorrow. So we’re heading to LA and San Diego for a little business/pleasure. A working vacation, (as usual) but a much needed one nonetheless.

In other exciting news, the “Black Majik Codexian” was extremely well received at the Munny Grubbers show, getting first place in the show! I was a bit surprised and a tad relieved, as this is a creature of my own creation, and I intend to make many more of these to inhabit this world I’ve created. Also, the Black Majik is available still, here.

That said, as some of you may know, there’s a second leg to the show. An online contest hosted by www.deliciousdrips.com. If you want to show him some love, I know he’d appreciate it: just register, and vote (the closer to delicious, the better!)
Here’s the direct link to him: http://www.deliciousdrips.com/submissions/submission.php?i=204

Lastly, I never want to make a post just text, so here’s some pics of my recently finished commission. He’s a 20″ mega munny based on the x-men character Cable. Big Thanks to Zac for the opportunity to do this piece for him!

The gun is hand sculpted out of resin. I wanted to go bigger, but it would have been to heavy and he wouldn’t be able to lift it. :(

This was my first mega munny, so it came with it’s own set of challenges, but all in all I really enjoyed working this big. Definitely looking forward to going big again soon! I’m ordering magicsculpt 20lbs at a time these days!

anyways, as always, thanks for all the love and support everybody! more developments for you soon!

Keep on rocking in the free world,

Something majik this way comes.

As usual, things are crazy busy around the fplus compound. been working very hard on some upcoming projects that I can not yet officially announce, not to mention a tremendous amount of commission work again this month. I’m fortunate enough to only take on commissions for pieces that I would actually enjoy, unlike a tattoo artist that ends up having to do tiring dragonflys or tribal when they really want to do something unique.

With all the commissions and freelance work, it’s been hard to do any pieces for myself, but I did manage to commit to a show here in Phoenix, that opens this Saturday at a graffiti shop called Just Blazed. Of course, I’m referring to the highly anticipated munny grubber show.

Some great artists in this line up, including my good friend, Jake Tong’s return to vinyl figures. he was recently excommunicated to Portland, and decided to become a portlandian bike fiend, but i managed to convince him to throw his hat in the ring on the show. He’s a very talented guy! Also, If your up in the OR, get a tattoo from him! www.jaketong.com

From the pieces I’ve seen so far, this is going to be a solid show, especially for a munny show where there tends to be a fair share of slap dashery normally, this show is shaping up to be probably one of the best of it’s kind!

I’ve had my piece for it done for about two weeks. I’ve been sitting on the pics and its been driving me crazy! So I finally decided it’s time to put them out there. I give you, “The Black Majik Codexian”:

A little back story for you:

Codexians, are the keepers of all books pertaining to majik, forever entombed in giant monasteries, they write all major scripts and spells of their discipline. Due to their comprehensive knowledge, they are believed to be some of the most powerful mages in the world, becoming masters of almost everything there is to know of their breed of majik.

Ikwell Shadeos, is a current codexian of Black Majik studies. A descendant of over a thousand year lineage of codexians. Although he is young, he is aa talented and ambitious mage, so wrapped up in his studies, that he himself is a walking spell.

I must admit, I am particularly proud of this piece. And more importantly, I will be exploring this theme much further with my future works. i have always enjoyed the mystical and the enchanted, but wanted to create something that stepped away from traditional fantasy elements. I will definitely be putting out more things from this realm. So I look forward to hearing what people think of it so far.

Lastly, I should have a 5 figure line up available in my webstore at the end of the month. It became delayed, but i’m really looking forward to getting them up soon! I’ll give you a hint, these pieces will rock your face off.

That’s all for now, I’ll post more soon. If anyone can make it to the show, stop by and say hi! I’ll be the tallest sumbitch you’ve seen all day!

Stay classy San Diego,

Stay cool Arizona,

Stay young Jake Tong.
