When I think of epic fantasy art, I immediately think of the work of the great Frank Frazetta. There are few that would argue that he set the bar for fantasy art and is truly one of the most talented fantasy artists of all time. If you haven’t seen his documentary “Painting with fire” Than I highly recommend you check it out. I’ve probably watched it a hundred times.
As many of you know, Frank passed away earlier this year. And I wanted o do an homage to his legacy. For me, the ultimate iconic Frazetta painting has to be “Death Dealer”:

A little over a month ago, I received a commission from a collector that was a big fan of my Lost Mage piece, and asked me to do something with similar elements. I spent a lot of time working and reworking this piece. For a larger piece like this, I feel like I keep the process a bit looser to kind of let it create itself, as opposed to have a laser guided plan for it up front.
I started with a sketch, I knew a couple major things I wanted to incorporate in the design, but was still totally unsure of how I wanted to go about most of them. you can see, I wasn’t even sure what I wanted to call him at first:
