The Corrupter is coming…
June 6th, 2011
So as a few of you may have noticed, I’ve been a little quieter than usual as of late. The biggest reason for this, is that I’ve been slowly whittling away at something I’ve been thinking about for a long time. Like several years now.
My first original sculpt.
That’s right, i’ve been secretly sneaking in time here and there, to take a stab at creating my first original figure. The reason it’s taken so incredibly long to say anything about it? It’s not going to be a one off, but a hand cast production piece.
So that changes the game a bit. I want this piece to push the limits of what people expect from self produced resin figures. I want it to be the platform for which people will recognize my work, and I want it to capture the essence of what I believe is the fundamental awesomeness of the vinyl scene.
This is no small task, I assure you.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be updating with blog posts and announcements as things finally get rolled out towards a finished product. but as of now, I wanted to announce it to all you folks that love what goes into making it, my process and a sneak at the soon finished figure.
first off, it started as an idea. I knew I wanted to do something “magical”. big surprise. So I started some sketches:

In all actuality, this is like 1/10th of the doodles I did coming up with this idea. the one on the left was the first one where I really felt like “I got it” at least from a basic concept:
Then, I slowly tweaked proportions and angles to really flesh out the feel I wanted the figure to have. One thing I think that really sets apart a figure for me, is that it has a very dynamic presence.
The other thing, like pretty much all my work I’ve ever done, is I want to tell a story. i want people to see a narrative when they look at the piece, not just a pretty colored piece on a shelf. So I decided that it would be two subjects in the set, “The corrupter”, and the “fungal fiend” being corrupted by his dark majik.

Once I was happy with the concept, basic composition, and energy of the piece, I start getting an idea of how I want to execute it in 3-D
as you can see, I’m not too slavish to my sketches. I want it to still have an organic, hand made feel.I worry that If I spend too much time refining and tightening my drawings, that the finished piece will feel rigid and stale.
So, the next steps were a couple months of rough sculpts, destroying them, starting over until I got to some shapes I was starting to be really happy with:

This is actually just my primary rough sculpt, and it’s still pretty lumpy for now. Once it’s done, I’ll make a mold of it, cast it again in wax, and tighten that up to make my master mold from. it’s a pretty intensive process, but I think the amount of time and attention to details I put into this will convey back to collectors when they have this piece in their hands.
Here’s a couple detail pics I’ll leave you with until the next update.

the next post should be of the finished sculpt, so keep an eye out for that soon!
