The Artwork of Josh Pearce
“The Fireheart Monk” custom Coarsetoys JAWS
June 21st, 2011
Instead of the usual fiction I right for a piece, I’d like to tell a true story:
Unbeknownst to me when I took this commission, this piece was perfectly timed for this part of my life. I was asked to do a monk character, and for a while, although I was excited about the concept, it was a commission, part of my job as a full time artist.
Then I went to the hospital.

Without getting into the long story of it, it was a huge wake up call for me. I’ve been a full time (often struggling) toy artist for over two years now. I don’t have my own blindbox, or even my own production figure or design printed on a dunny, I just try to create what I enjoy, and I’m truly blessed that I can do this everyday. but for a second, I lost sight of this. I was unmotivated, unsatisfied, and depriving myself of everything I needed to keep going. I wasn’t doing crap work, I was just self destructing basically.

when I finally got myself back on track, it was time for the monk. And I remembered why I do this, it’s not the money, if it was about money, I wouldn’t have quit my job, and started my life over to do this. It’s about the joy I get from creating, and creating things to bring joy to others. I put a lot of myself in each piece I make, and I am hopeful that it shows in the finished product.

For me, The Fireheart monk represents my return to the path I set to pursue, a pursuit of my passion to create. The original design for the stomach piece, was to have a crane and tiger, a pretty standard martial arts symbol and what not. It quickly changed to the phoenix, as I too rise from the ashes to burn stronger and brighter than ever before. well, that’s the goal at least.

anyways, I hope you guys really enjoy this piece, it has a place very close to my heart, but in some way or another, every piece does. I want to sincerely thank all my amazing collectors and clients, and everyone that draws inspiration or some kind of pleasure from my work. If it wasn’t for you, I couldn’t be me.

As with everything in life, the more familiar it gets the less it excites us. Artwork can sometimes become a grind just like everything else so every now and then we must step back a remember what it is you get to do each day. Not punch away at a keyboard or dig ditches, you get to make toys. It’s pretty awesome buddy.
And this work is beautiful.
